Decades of Leadership Experience into
a Door Opener

The Challenge: A Lifetime of Experience

without a clear way to package it

Hanifa had spent decades leading significant change and transformation projects across higher education institutions, large corporates, smaller organisations, and public sector bodies. What made her work particularly unusual was how much of it happened at the complex interface between universities and the outside world, a space few people understood as well as she did.

She had always wanted to write a book so others could use her ideas to achieve their own Orbit Shifts. The problem wasn't having enough to say

The problem was knowing how to package such wide-ranging expertise into something accessible, without it running to encyclopaedic length.

What she didn't yet know was how valuable it would be simply to talk her thinking through with someone who could ask the difficult questions, drill deeper, and wasn't daunted by the scale of the concepts. As she puts it now: "If I'd understood that, I'd have started much sooner."

Who is Professor Hanifa Shah, OBE?

Professor Hanifa Shah, OBE, PhD, is a leader in change, transformation, and innovation, with experience spanning higher education, major corporates, and public sector organisations. Her work is grounded in practice: she has led transformation at the complex interface between universities and business, the kind of work that is rarely documented and even more rarely made transferable.

Orbit Shift: Break Free From the Leadership Patterns That Limit You is her first book on Leadership.

The Solution: Draw out the structure that was already there

Professor Hanifa Shah OBE, PhD, had deep and real expertise. It just existed more intuitively than explicitly. The work was to surface it, name it, and turn it into something a reader could pick up and use.

Solution Step 1: Talking it through

The first step was creating the space to think out loud.

Hanifa had always found it difficult to know how to package such wide-ranging expertise. What shifted everything was the experience of talking her concepts, experiences, and thinking through with someone who could ask the difficult questions, drilling for depth without being daunted by the scale of the ideas.

Solution Step 2: Playing it back, questioning it, sharpening it

A real coherence, clarity, and conviction kept surfacing throughout the process. The key was having it reflected back.

Each time the ideas were played back and challenged, Hanifa found better and better ways to explain things she understood deeply but had previously expressed intuitively rather than explicitly. The process was, in her words, "surprisingly self-affirming."

Solution Step 3: Turning the book into a platform

Writing Orbit Shift became far more than publishing a book. It became the central reference point for everything Hanifa does.

It is now the first place she points people to when they want to understand her work. Since publication, she has been featured in Business Influencer magazine, appeared on a national podcast, and been invited to a local radio station with a million listeners to discuss the ideas in the book. A post using Orbit Shift to evaluate the NASA Artemis event gained strong traction on LinkedIn. The book has made her far more visible and helped others recognise the value and impact of what she has spent decades building.

"The process was surprisingly self-affirming. A real coherence, clarity and conviction in my purpose, vision and values kept surfacing throughout. Having it played back to me, then questioned and challenged, meant I kept finding better and better ways to explain ideas that mattered deeply to me. Debs wasn't daunted by the scale of the concepts, the activity or the experience. What I didn't appreciate before we started was how valuable it would simply be to talk my thoughts through with someone like that. If I'd understood that, I'd have started much sooner."

"You already know your stuff—just get on with telling everyone else about it."

What Debbie Says About Hanifa

Hanifa's world is genuinely complex: many people, departments, politics, problems, regulations, and constant change to manage, all at once. During our early sessions, I kept pushing her to go deeper, to tell me more. And every single time, she brought us back to the young people in her guardianship. That was her anchor through all of it.

The first time she used the phrase "proper purpose", I was dumbstruck. It was the first time the word "purpose" had ever really made sense to me. It had to go in the model, and it did.

Hanifa is thoughtful and insightful, sees far ahead, and wants to bring everyone with her. She also has more ideas than one book can hold. We had to work hard to condense what made it into Orbit Shift, and she has plenty more to say. I suspect this is the first of several books.
